GACKT Dubs for the 「King Kong」 Reboot, Really Likes the Movie! 「20 times more interesting than 『Jurassic Park』」
The production team of the Hollywood version of 「GODZILLA」 reunited to create the movie 「Kong: Skull Island」 which depicts the origins of King Kong. GACKT and Sasaki Nozomi, who were chosen as voice actors for the Japanese dub of the movie, attended the dubbing event in a studio in Tokyo on February 16.
A talented group of actors including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, and John Goodman have been brought together for this epic adventure. In 1973, the members of an expedition team sent to the undeveloped island, Skull Island, find their lives in danger when they encounter gigantic creatures like Kong. GACKT will be dubbing for the protagonist, the mercenary James Conrad (Hiddleston), while Sasaki will be dubbing for the heroine, the war photojournalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson).
Sasaki, who is taking on the challenge of dubbing for the first time, appeared tense as she said 「I’ll do my best」, and GACKT, who appeared indifferent, also spoke his mind, saying 「I may look like this but I’m nervous」. In the scene where Conrad and Weaver are trying to find out each other’s true intentions, Sasaki couldn’t smoothly say 「Igirisu rikugun (British Army)」 and looked embarrassed, but GACKT said 「Cute」 and smiled. With regards to GACKT who led with his restrained performance, Sasaki said, inspired, 「His aura is so amazing, and I wasn’t sure that he would talk to me but he’s been giving me advice, he’s very friendly」. Upon hearing that, GACKT said 「I’m nice to cute people. Because I’m a gentleman」, and got the reporters wrapped up in laughter.
When asked about the movie’s story, GACKT said enthusiastically 「It’s 20 times more interesting than 『Jurassic Park』. I don’t really say this but, it’s better if you do watch it!」. He then continued speaking at length about it, saying 「The movie opens with a completely different King Kong than what my generation was familiar with. It was so interesting that I ended up watching it while sitting at the edge of my seat. Here and there were tributes to Ghibli and special effects too, and the manager who sat next to me as I watched it explained to me saying 『That scene is a tribute』 (laughs). And, if you watch the after-credits scene, I think those who get it will say 『No way!』 and start clapping and laughing」, and he added 「The original title is 『KONG』, in other words, a “Kong” becomes a “King” through the events of this movie. Look forward to finding out how he becomes a King」.
Sasaki praised the movie’s realism, saying 「It’s a really thrilling movie that you can’t tear your eyes away from. I felt as if I was there in the movie as well」. She also spoke of the movie’s charm through a woman’s perspective, saying 「I gradually became empathetic towards him and ended up thinking 『Do your best! Go! Go!』. He eventually becomes a lovable characer. Both men and women like a strong character」.
Professional wrestler Makabe Togi will also be joining in the Japanese dub version of 「Kong: Skull Island」 as a voice actor. The movie will be released nationwide on March 25.

On the 16th, actress Sasaki Nozomi attended the public dubbing for the movie 「Kong: Skull Island」(to be released March 25) with artiste GACKT.

Sasaki, who will be recording the next day, greeted nervously 「It’s my first time doing dubs, and I’m feeling extremely nervous, it’s also my first time dubbing in front of cameras so I’ll do my best」. 「Since GACKT-san is hear, please lead the way」 she said, relying on GACKT as she started her first public dubbing.

Sasaki recalled the moment when shei was offered the chance to dub the role of the photojournalist Mason Weaver, acted by Brie Larson, Academy Award winner for Best Actress in the movie 「Room」, 「“Me!?” was the initial feeling that I got. Of course I was unsure, but I thought that it’s important to challenge myself with something new, and since I figured that such chances rarely come by, I thought that I should definitely give this a try」. She also appealed 「A place was provided where I could watch the movie and, it was a movie that was thrilling and I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it. I think that this movie is one that even women will definitely enjoy」.
Also, she was asked whether ambitions of foraying into Hollywood grew through this movie, to which Sasaki answered, bright eyed 「It would be an honour, if there was such a chance I would definitely like to take up the challenge」. She was enthusiastic as she added 「As this time’s dubbing is also a first for me, I think it would be nice if I can try more and more new things」.
Sasaki Nozomi 「Connected through this?」
Relating to the scene where Weaver and King Kong connected with each other, Sasaki was asked “Was there a recent incident when you felt connected with someone?”.
Sasaki revealed 「(On 8 February) when I turned 29, I received branded kitchen knives that I’ve always wanted from my stylist, even though I’ve never said that I wanted them, and it made me feel like we were connected」.

On February 16 (Thu), the public dubbing was held for the movie 『Kong: Skull Island』, in which GACKT performs the Japanese dub for the protagonist.

This work is an adventure movie about the battle between the expedition team, which infiltrated the mysterious “Skull Island” with the intention of territory expansion, and “Kong”, the guardian of the island. GACKT will be providing the Japanese dubs for the protagonist, who is the leader of the expedition team Conrad, acted by Tom Hiddleston.
During the public dubbing, he entered the venue with Sasaki Nozomi, who, similarly, will be providing the Japanese dub for the movie’s heroine, Weaver, acted by Brie Larson. With regards to when he was told that he will be doing the dubs, GACKT said 「I am very much looking forward to being involved with the work through the voice of the protagonist.」, and now, after he has finished the actual recording in the morning, he once again shared his thoughts on the movie, saying 「I think that it’s a really good movie. Please do watch it」.
Then, immediately, public dubbing started, and GACKT was worried for Sasaki Nozomi who remained tense. GACKT showed off a “top-class” performance with a low voice suited for the composed retired veteran who doesn’t really show his emotions and did it in one take, but when Sasaki Nozomi made mistakes with her lines, he gently followed with 「It’s alright, shall we do it again」. After completing dub recording for 2 scenes, GACKT was asked about the movie, to which he gave his seal of approval, saying 「It was so interesting that from the start of the movie, which opened with a completely different King Kong than what my generation was familiar with, to the very end, I was at the edge of my seat」. I would like to accept offers as much as possible」, and for Hollywood movies as well, GACKT showed an interest, saying 「Because I’m recently preparing for my tour, I’ve been rejecting offers but I would like to take up that challenge again」.
The movie 『Kong: Skull Island』 will be released on March 25 (Sat) in Marunouchi Picadilly, Shinjuku Picadilly, and more. Godzilla vs. King Kong” is expected to be released in 2020 following this movie. GACKT said 「It’s 20 or 30 times more interesting than Jurassic Park. I don’t really put it like this, and it seems like it’ll become part of a series so it’s definitely a good idea to catch this」, do come and enjoy this movie along with GACKT’s acting.

Singer GACKT (43) and actress Sasaki Nozomi (29) attended the public Japanese dubbing for the American action movie「Kong: Skull Island」(to be released March 26) on the 16th in a studio in Tokyo.
GACKT, who has had abundant experience dubbing for games and movies thus far, will be performing as the leader of the Skull Island expedition.「My voice changes depending on the character, so since the character this time around is described as one who doesn’t really show his emotions I used a rather low voice to speak. It may seem to you that the tension is low now but, I’m just dragging the role. My voice is usually a little brighter」he said while looking relaxed.
On the other hand, Sasaki, who is taking on the challenge of dubbing for the first time, kept making mistakes when saying「Former British Army Special Air Service...」and repeatedly excused herself, saying「I’m sorry. I’m extremely nervous」. Having followed GACKT’s lead and somehow weathering through, she said with great respect「I was moved. With his aura being so bright and sparkly, I wasn’t sure that he would talk to me but he’s been kindly teaching me since the beginning. It’s a normal gesture but he was very kind」.

Also, GACKT just returned to Japan from Malaysia on the 15th, when Kim Jong-nam, the step brother of the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, was assassinated. Replying to questions from news reporters about this, he answered simply with「It was normal (in the streets of Kuala Lumpur)」.
