The public dubbing for adventure epic 『Kong: Skull Island』 was held on February 16 (Thu) in Tokyo, and was attended by GACKT and Sasaki Nozomi.
On the 14th (Tue), Makabe Togi pitted himself against it during a public dubbing for this movie, and upon having his faults pointed out by the director, he described it as 「Tough」 with a wry smile. In this event, GACKT, who will be providing the Japanese dub for Tom Hiddleston’s character, the expedition leader James Conrad, and Sasaki Nozomi, who will be providing the Japanese dub of Brie Larson’s photojournalist, Mason Weaver, attended the public dubbing.
Sasaki, who will be providing dubs for a Hollywood movie for the first time with this movie, said with zeal「I’ll do my best without getting nervous」, and GACKT, who stood next to her looking calm, said with a smile「I may look like this but I’m nervous」, afterwhich the public dubbing began. On that day, GACKT, who had been recording his dub since morning, calmly went through his lines, but on the other hand, the tense Sasaki, who will be recording her dubs the next day, got a comment from the director,「You sure are nervous」. Upon seeing her like that, GACKT looked at Sasaki and said「Cute」, and the venue was wrapped up in laughter. Also, as Sasaki looked at GACKT’s dubbing, she looked impressed as she said「I was moved. His aura was so bright and sparkly」, and then she revealed「He has been teaching my since the start, I think he’s a very friendly person」, to which GACKT replied with a smile「I’m nice to cute people」.
After they finished the public dubbing, GACKT said excitedly,「(When watching this movie) it develops differently than expected. At the end I was watching it while sitting at the edge of my seat」, and looking back at it, he added「I’m really glad that I got the offer. After I finished watching it, I got excited on my own」. With regards to the challenge of dubbing, Sasaki said「I was uneasy」but she then added with admiration,「I thought that it was important to challenge myself with something new so I wanted to give it a try. It was a thrilling movie that I really couldn’t tear my eyes away from until the end」. She also commented「I think this is a movie that even women will enjoy watching」.
Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts earlier said「I was inspired by Japanese culture」, and GACKT spoke of one way to enjoy the film,「There are lots of tributes to Ghibli and Japanese special effects added in. The manager who was sitting next to me and watching it with me was explaining『This is a tribute to that』」. In addition, the unique creatures that appear in this movie have become a talking point, but when asked about the most impressionable creature, Sasaki said「It’s definitely King Kong. I gradually became empathetic towards him and ended up thinking, King Kong do your best!! I think such a tough character is one that both men and women will like」.
Also, when asked about acting in Hollywood movies with this work as a starting point, GACKT said with zeal「Recently I’ve been rejecting movie offers because of my tour so I would instead like to do that maybe next year or the year after. Because there are a lot of interesting people in Hollywood, it’s definitely a challenge I would like to take up」. Sasaki too, said with a smile「It would be an honour, and if there was such a chance I would definitely like to take up the challenge」.
At the end, Sasaki made an appeal for the movie, saying「Of course, including the action scenes, the thoughts and conflicts met by the characters are also well depicted so I think the movie is one to look forward to」.
The movie is set in the mythical Skull Island that floats on the South Pacific. On the island where never-before-seen creatures live, the gigantic guardian of the island “King Kong” appears before the expedition team. King Kong will be going up against Godzilla in 2020. The expedition team, that is made up of a stellar cast that includes Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, will be going up against the gigantic King Kong that stands over 30 meters tall and was created in a collaboration between the production team of 『Pacific Rim』and『GODZILLA』.

RBBTODAY.COM: Sasaki Nozomi dubbing with GACKT
Sasaki Nozomi takes on her first foreign movie dubbing with GACKT! 『Kong: Skull Island』 public dubbing
GACKT and Sasaki Nozomi have been selected to be part of the Japanese dubbing cast for the movie 『Kong: Skull Island』 which will be released on March 25. On February 16, a public dubbing for a portion of it was held.
This movie is part of a notable series that has an upcoming release scheduled in 2020 that features a dream match between the gigantic Kong and Godzilla, the King of Monsters.
For this movie’s Japanese dub, GACKT will be performing as James Conrad, the leader of the expedition team sent to Skull Island, who is acted by Tom Hiddleston, while Sasaki will be performing as Mason Weaver, the photojournalist, acted by Academy Award winning actress Brie Larson.
This will be Sasaki’s first time taking on the challenge of dubbing for a foreign movie. 「I’m feeling extremely nervous because this is my first time, and it’s also a first for me to be dubbing in front of everyone’s cameras」 she said, with an anxious look on her face that stuck since she appeared. While being watched by that many reporters, she performed a few scenes but she remained nervous from start to end.
Sasaki was hasty and was unable to read her lines well, saying 「I made a mistake. I’m extremely nervous」, and GACKT, who has become used to dubbing in movies, anime, and games, commented 「Cute」, loosening the tension in the air, and leading her forward with an effortless performance.
When asked about her impression of GACKT, Sasaki commented 「His aura appears so bright and sparkly, and I wasn’t sure that he would talk to me but he’s been teaching me a lot since the beginning, I think he’s a very friendly person (laugh)」. In reply to that, GACKT said with a smile 「I’m nice to cute people, because I’m a gentleman」.
With regards to the movie, Sasaki, who watched a King Kong movie for the first time, shared her thoughts, saying 「It’s a movie is constantly thrilling and one that you really can’t tear your eyes away from until the end. I initially thought King Kong was scary but, in the end he became an adorable character that I wanted to cheer for. Women can definitely enjoy it. The power and realism is amazing. It felt like I was in the movie too」.
She also revealed what she felt upon receiving the offer to be a member of the dubbing cast, 「Me!? was the initial uneasiness that I had but, I thought that it’s important to challenge new things, and since this was a rare opportunity, I thought that I should definitely take on this challenge」. In addition, she was asked about taking on Hollywood movies, to which she replied with positivity, saying 「It would be an honour, and if there was such a chance I would definitely like to take up the challenge」.
And, akin to her role in the movie, Sasaki was asked about an event where she felt connected with someone, and she answered 「I turned 29 this month and, I received branded kitchen knives that I’ve always wanted from my stylist even though I’ve never said that I wanted them, I felt like we were connected」, showing a side of her that enjoys cooking.
On the other hand, when GACKT received the offer to be part of the dubbing cast, he said that he first asked to watch the movie. 「I honestly wasn’t looking forward to it much but, (when I watched it) at the end I found myself sitting so far off the edge of my seat that I was almost in the next row. It was that interesting」 he said, sharing his thoughts.
「With the image of King Kong that everyone has, you’d probably wonder from the start of the movie『When is he going to scale the building...』, but it’s not like that. It starts with the story of the birth of King Kong. Then creatures beyond your imagination appear, and there’s a reason for that as well. While thinking 『it would be tough to live in such a world』, the development builds up and everything gets overturned with a variety of tricks. Also, there are lots of tributes to Ghibli and old Japanese special effects added in, and the manager who was sitting next to me and watching it with me was explaining 『This is a tribute to that』」, he said, talking about highlights that special effects fans and Ghibli fans can enjoy.
Furthermore, GACKT appears to really enjoy this movie, as he said excitedly 「After the end credits, something like a trailer starts playing. I think those who are familiar with the old works will burst out laughing and saying 『No way!』. The clip will develop so fully that you’ll wonder how far ahead they’ve planned it, so those who don’t get it please ask someone who’s familiar with it」. Following that, he gave his stamp of approval, saying 「It’s 20 times more interesting than Jurassic Park!」.
When asked for opinions on 『Godzilla vs Kong』, which is scheduled for release in 2020, GACKT could not stop talking about it, despite getting concerned and asking 「May I say that much?」. He then shared his expectations, saying 「I think there are people who feel that it’ll probably be interesting just from hearing the title but, after watching this movie, I think you can start to expect 『Godzilla vs Kong』. Actually, the original title for this movie is 『KONG』, so through the events of this movie, Kong becomes a King. From there, it leads to the next movie」.

The public dubbing for the movie『Kong: Skull Island』was held on the 16th in Tokyo’s Avaco Studio, where GACKT and Sasaki Nozomi spoke of the highlights of this movie and the movie that follows.
GACKT, who has watched this movie, talked about the highlights, saying「With the image of King Kong that everyone has, you’d probably wonder from the start of the movie『When is he going to scale the building...』. It starts with the story of the birth of King Kong, and there’s a reason why in the middle it starts to progress with 2 different timelines, and creatures beyond our imaginations start to appear. I suppose it would be tough to live in such a world (laughs) 」.
Next, he revealed that it is studded with tributes to Ghibli and Japanese special effects, saying with a smile「Ghibli fans and special effects fans will probably get the feeling of『This refers to that scene!』. I think they will be able to enjoy these tributes」. He then added excitedly「After the end credits, a trailer starts playing and I think those who get it will definitely burst out laughing. Like, no way…, because it’ll develop so fully that you’ll wonder about how far ahead they’ve planned, I think those who get it will clap their hands and laugh at the end」.
Also,『Godzilla vs. Kong』has been planned for release in 2020. He reminisced,「I think after watching this movie, everyone would wonder『What will happen next』. The Japanese title reads “King Kong” but, the original title is “Kong”. In other words, how the regular “Kong” becomes a “King”, and since it then progresses to the next story… May I say that much?」. Getting deep into the content, GACKT praised the execution of this film, saying「It’s 20 to 30 times more interesting than『Jurassic Park』. Since it’s also been confirmed to be part of a series, you won’t be able to enjoy that unless you watch this. You’ll feel like you’ve been deceived, so do watch it」.
In this movie where Kong and a variety of other creatures appear in, Sasaki commented, saying「It’s King Kong after all! Initially, I thought『Isn’t it scary...』but, I gradually became empathetic towards him and ended up thinking,『King Kong do your best!』. He’s also a character that becomes adorable, and I think that his toughness would be something that both men and women like」.
『Kong: Skull Island』, which continues 2014’s『Godzilla』series that gained worldwide success, is a spectacular blockbuster, produced by both Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., that looks at the true “King” of nature from a new perspective. After discovering that an island, thought to only exist in legends, really does exist, an expedition team is dispatched, and they experience the wonders and dangers of an unmarked “paradise”.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts is the movie’s director, with Tom Hiddleston, known for his role as Loki in the series『Thor』, as the expedition team leader Conrad, and Brie Larson, Academy Award winner for Best Actress in the movie『Room』, as the war photojournalist Weaver. Other famous names involved are Samuel L. Jackson, and John C, Reilly. The movie has already been confirmed to be part of a series, with『Godzilla: King of Monsters』as an upcoming release for March 2019, and a confrontation with Godzilla in 2020 announced.
