15 Years

Dear my LOVERS

I'm going to post part of the editorial
from the blog magazine again.

Today marks 15 years since my solo debut.
I wrote about all my feelings in the blog magzine,
so give it a read.

I've arrived at Narita Airport.
It's ridiculously cold in Japan...
Even though it's the end of April already
it's really weird.

Oh well, nevermind.
Today is a special day.

15 years before today,

April 25th 1999,
I had my solo debut
as "GACKT".

That said,
not a single person from the office
has said congratulations.
I wonder if they have forgotten,
or if they haven't noticed...
I guess there are some who don't know.

It's sad.

The people in my office
are never looking at the past or the future,
only the present.

They're only thinking of desperately doing
what has to be done now as their job.
They are fundamentally misunderstanding the meaning of that work.

The difference in our level of consciousnes
is downright sad.

But that's the way it is.

Maybe it's been the same for all 15 years.
My worries have been the people at the office.
I can't even laugh at it...
Ahahahaha.

But,
if I said every dissatisfaction that rises up in me,
I'd never stop complaining.
There's no such thing as a world without dissatisfactions.

Rather, I should be thankful from the bottom of my heart
for everyone that followed me this far.

Thanks.
For following my headstrong self like this.
Because I'm going to keep running like this without dropping my pace.

And let's look forward.

Not leaning on anyone,
but not giving up...
I'll keep standing tall in that stance.

Staff who can really walk this road with me
will either emerge from the ones I have,
or freshly appear.

I'll definitely find the people I need.
And if I can't find them, I'll make them.

Most people in the world
live life on one of two paths.
Which are you?

There are those who spread one hour of work out over 9 hours,
aim to earn 1100yen an hour [about $11, Japanese minimum wage is about 700yen, 1100yen is about the highest you'd get for retail work]
and think they're making money.
There are those who really think that.

On the other hand, there are those who finish it in 25 minutes
and make that skill into their fortune.

The difference in their lives in 10 years time is obvious.

The kind of person I am looking for is obvious.

Today, 15 years ago.
I withdrew from MALICE MIZER,
and was told a lot of things by a lot of people,
even so, just wanting to respond to the feelings
of the many fans who desperately followed me,
I made a bold move.

That was the day when,
without being able to see the future,
with no guarantees of a future,
I made a new start.

Since then, a lot has happened.
Really, a lot.

When I look back,
I was definitely haunted by problems with the office since then.

It takes a tremendous amount of power
to establish an agency.
It's not just power,
the manager who runs the agency
has many conditions.

Power, stamina,
leadership, ability to take action,
ideas, taste,
attack power, ability to pull people in,
leadership [yes he said this twice], destructive power,
ability to judge things, ability to avert a crisis
It's impossible to run a production company
in this entertainment industry
if you don't have a group of people that, between them,
have all these traits.

If you're merely smart,
or good at managing,
you can't run a production company.

Because in this industry,
there's a riduculous number of devils
and demons with human faces.

If you're going to interact with those guys,
then just the "I went to a good university!" kind of smartness
or common sense isn't enough of a weapon.
"I used to do X for my job"...
in this world, it's not enough.

If a bunch of people like that got together,
they'd be eaten alive by other agencies,
and destroyed.

That's a peculiartity of this special world
we call the entertainment industry.

There are a lot of "old ways" of doing things
and a mountain of "associates" you don't want to associate with.

There are a lot of production compaines that aren't around anymore
that I wasn't surprised to hear rumors were connected to the yakuza.

It's a special world where as soon as something happens,
you'll hear a whisper of, "It's destroy or be destroyed".

There have been so many times I've been disgusted with this destroying.

Since I made my solo debut,
the people in the position of manager that the agency is entrusted to
have really worked hard.

When I met each of them,
they were wonderful people overflowing with energy.

But,
a significant number of them,
once the money started flowing, immediately changed,
and began spending it up, using money ridiculously
like it grew on trees.

The obvious difference from how normal businesses make profits,
no,
That the period of time between investment and profit
is so short, and the profits so big if you "get it right"
and that the way of "getting it right" involves a lot of gambling, like a lottery
probably corrupts the heads of companies in the entertainment industry.

Looking at the managers of other agencies
to be frank,
I can count on one hand the number I've met who seem honest.

It's sad.
I wonder how long I'll have to worry about this bullshit.

A lot of people have told me,
"GACKT, you should be the head of the company"

But,
I'm not skilful enough to do management and produce work at the same time.

No,
maybe I could if I decided to,
but I'm absolutely certain that if I did
the quality of my shows would decrease.
If I did a show while doing the accounting,
GACKT shows would be worthless.

My creative style is well defined.

I am very particular
about the works,
shows, plays,
movies, concerts,
lives, artworks
and any and all forms of expression
I want to create.

I abhor the commercialist way of doing things.

At this point in time,
I'm in complete opposition to management people

ADULTS AND CHILDREN, EXPECIALLY FOR DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW IT'S A PLEASANT MOVIE

GACKT: “ADULTS AND CHILDREN, EXPECIALLY FOR DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW IT'S A PLEASANT MOVIE”

“adults and children, especially for the different point of views it’s a pleasant movie.”

HE’S BACK WITH THE “AKUMU CHAN” MOVIE, THAT BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN CAN ENJOY

That’s right. Usually children movies are divided from the adult ones, but this movie can be seen by both and together enjoying it for the different point of views. Even if there are some difficult words for children, I think that the story is easily understandable together with the meaning of the words from the context. Therefore if you can understand the story and you try to listen to it, you’ll slowly understand. On the contrary, adults are caught up by the words and get unexpectedly disoriented. After seeing this movie, I think that it’s even more interesting to see how children understood it and what they think of it.

THERE WERE REACTION FROM CHILDREN WHEN THE DRAMA WAS AIRED?
The producer understood that even if we were using difficult terms, children would be able to understand it anyway and that with a simple story, the new generation would have never get bored. The peculiarity of this movie is exactly that it knows hot to let parents and children enjoy the experience cleverly mixing difficult parts with more easier ones.

WAS IT DECIDED TO MAKE THIS A MOVIE DURING THE DRAMA EPISODES SHOOTING?
Since the audience during the first episode was really good, I heard speeches like “I’m thinking to turn this into a movie”. As the filming went on we used to say “I hope it will become a movie!”. As for the drama, you couldn’t really understand the script from the first moments till the end, if it was to be done in half they would have called a good scriptwriter. When we were discussing how to expand the last part, the movie speech came up, especially because we were evaluating that in the finale we really don’t see very well how it was going to end. So when we reached the last episode, I was conviced that “Ah, this is certainly becoming a movie!”.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITY WITH SHIKI TAKASHI, THE CHARACTER YOU PLAYED?
Just like Shiki, I can’t hold back my feelings and I don’t talk fast.

IT LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS A VERY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE ON THE SET, ARE THERE ANY MOMENTS THAT CAPTURED YOUR ATTENTION?
When Shiki was saying some decisive sentences he used to take off his glasses, usually I don’t do this! It’s something I wasn’t used to, those were some tremendously serious scenes and I always picked the wrong moment, plus my fringe was getting stuck in the sidepiece of the glasses!!! And an “ouch it hurts!” was slipping through my lips, it was not cool at all!

ANYWAY SHIKI HAS BEEN DEFINED AS A WONDERFUL COOK. DID YOU GET USED TO THE COOKING SCENES? DO YOU OFTEN COOK?
I like to cook! But as soon as I try to I get the sensation that cooking is something women do. It’s an atmosphere in which man should not enter, I wish women wouldn’t think about it like this.
When I get told “Men should not enter” I’m always shocked. Looking someone that’s cooking makes me happy.

YOU PROVED TO BE A GOOD FOOD EXPERT IN THE “GEINOUJIN KAKUDUKE CHECK” SHOW
Exactly. Because I live, I really care about food. I mostly eat once a day. If I think about how long life is, I cut off 10000 meals. But I can’t drink cheap wine.

I HAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT FOOD RESEARCH IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR GACKT
Exactly. I love meat so much, when I was younger I used to eat a lot of meat, but as time passed, I had to lower the quantity. Even if I eat outside, I change restaurants according to my mood because depending on the places good restaurants are different. Usually to eat a good Ramen, I go to Fukuoka, instead for Horumonyaki I go to Nagoya. Since when I was a child I don’t really like fish very much, I decided to go to the places where you eat it. I only go to Kanazawa and Niigata.

IN THE END, A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE THAT CAN’T WAIT TO SEE “AKUMU CHAN” THE MOVIE:
You can go watch it with your boyfriend, but I’d like you to go with your family, since recently parents are not watching movies with their children anymore. Go with your family, I wish you could all find the bond between parents and children again.
So I gave you my best hope with this work.

What kind of woman would make GACKT fall in love?

The famous drama aired in 2012, Akumu Chacha, is coming back a sa movie! We will move between reality and nightmares, what is the fate of our heroine Ayami and Akumu chan? Before the release, Saturday May 3rd, we interviewed GACKT who's playing in the movie sequel of the drama.

「 Love declaration for Keiko Kitakawa?」

■　Including this work, recently GACKT has been very active as an actor. Since when you are interested in acting?
G: I wonder since when... I had experience in acting since I was in a band, so I think from when I was 20 years old.

■ Actor and singer, what's the difference between the two GACKT?
G: Not much, it's actually the same.

■ What do you mean?
G: If I can make a position for myself as an actor, there's no need to ask for the role to someone else. You build up the role working, talking and communicating with the director, the staff and the co-stars. I feel that if the director tells you that you have to be like this, I think "that's why he chose me". And I think that becoming the character means existing for every person, I think it's the same for an artist.

■ How did you feel about reuniting with the members of the drama?
G: Everyone is friendly here, there's a good atmosphere. Especially Manatsu she is a mood maker, she always had the thrust for everyone and was always at the center of the attention among the co-stars.

■ Regarding your character in the drama, you had a calm image, but...
G: More than you could think, I'm good at acting like a child. I'm scary and really impressive. Amazing.

■ What kind of "nightmare" does GACKT see?
G: In the dream, I'm dating Keiko. There's a good atmosphere in the beginning, then, I don't know why, she gave me a glass of water. Keiko smiled, then I drank. So she said "Drink again" and I drank again and again. In the end I said "It's not possible anymore" but she said with cold voice "Not anymore" and she continued many times. So I woke up screaming. And when I woke up I called her on the phone and tolde her. She said "Is that so?" and she was really pleased with herself. So I though it wasn't really a dream. (laughs)

■ Please, tell us what to expect from the movie.
G: It's something that both kids and adult can enjoy and this work has to be seen with kids and parents. A message to parents has been added in many parts of the movie, Shiki Takashi, whom I played, is not good at telling things. In fact he's quite immature himself. How ever by starting to communicate gradually, he's becoming better in talking, this means that Shiki himself is growing. I can say the same about the relationship between children and parents, against the children, parents close their hearts hiding them from children's sight. We can say that in the relationship between parents and children to if the parent can grow with time and become an adult. i think it would be nice if a message like this could reach them.

● Learned. World Domination!

■ If you had a door that could lead you "anywhere" now, where would your destination be?
G: Finland or Estonia... There are a lot of beautiful women there. So they told me, so I have to go there. However when I go to other countries, people of these countries always tell me the same thing, I heard the same when I went to Czechoslovakia (laughs). Actually there are a lot of beautiful women in Poland, I was surprised.

■ So, I've heard you want to learn spanish. Is it because you want to conquer Spanish women?
G: It's one of the reasons (laughs). I can speak English and Chinese now, if I'll be able to speak Spanish, I'll be able to talk with more then half of the people in the world. That's why. If I'll be able to do so, will I have more fun? I'm studying English again now. So maybe another time.

■ What is the ideal woman for GACKT... I'm curious to know what kind of woman would the perfect man want.
G: I like beautiful women, but I like cute women more. I love women with a cute smile. Beauty is like a flower getting old, but cuteness change with the scenery. The fact is that when you get old, beauty will take different shapes. Cuteness is something more sophisticated. I'm insisting on finding a person this cute.

■ What kind of dish do you want a woman to cook you?
G: Soup, white stew especially. It wasn't so different once. The fluid that the old man drank in "A God of Flanders"- I'm so curious, they told me it could be absolutely delicious.

Yuiko (Manatsu Kimura) goes to the Akie elementary school where Ayami (Keiko KItagawa) teaches. She has the ability to predict the future waiting for the unconsciousness of a person and connect with them through a nightmare. Yuiko who transferred to Akie elementary school when she was in fifth grade, has defeated her pain due to her power since a year and a half.
