GACKT who dubbed for the newly remade「King Kong」, reveals his conversation with Tom Hiddleston
On April 5, the Roaring Cheering Screening Event for the adventure epic「Kong: Skull Island」(in cinemas now), that depicts the origins of King Kong, and was made by the production team of「GODZILLA」, was held in Tokyo, Yurakucho’s Marunouchi Piccadilly, and it was attended by GACKT, who was involved as a voice actor for the Japanese dub.
It’s set in 1973. The expedition team that was sent to Skull Island, an unknown island floating in the Pacific, find their lives in danger when they encounter Kong and other gigantic fearsome creatures. It boasts a rich variety of casts including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, and MIYAVI. For the dubbed version, GACKT voices team leader Conrad (Hiddleston), Sasaki Nozomi voices war photojournalist Weaver (Larson), professional wrestler Makabe Togi voices American soldier Reles (Eugene Cordero).
The Cheering Screening refers to a form of screening format that allows the use of noise making instruments or your voice during screening. For stakeholders, it will be good for the first Roaring and Cheering Screening, and even during the event, GACKT fans “cheered” on GACKT with their shrill screams and thundersticks. In that enthusiasm, GACKT laughed and said「I’m shocked by everyone’s tension」.
During the Japan premiere that was held on March 16, GACKT met Hiddleston for the first time,「We spoke about something along the lines of『Was filming difficult?』. And he said, since it was filmed on-site, it felt like the heat and the humidity makes you dispirited. On the red carpet, when we were waiting in the tent, he kept saying『It’s so cold……』(laughs). And even after it ended, he hurriedly went into the car, I guess it was really too cold……」, he revealed, and the venue was filled with laughter.
It was packed with powerful visuals but GACKT was focused in the opening scene in Vietnam. He said he was overwhelmed by Hollywood’s scale, saying「There’s a scene in Vietnam that appears, and the atmosphere really comes out when the warehouses and boats all appear at once. The American actor who appears in that scene said that a lot of his friends contacted him, asking『Did you go all the way to Vietnam?』, and he told them that it was filmed in the studio. I thought,『So Hollywood does things like this in the studio……』」.
