【Event Report】GACKT and Sasaki Nozomi at Public Dubbing for 『Kong: Skull Island』「20 times more intersting that Jurassic aPark」

On February 16 (Thu), the public dubbing was held for the movie 『Kong: Skull Island』, in which GACKT performs the Japanese dub for the protagonist.

This work is an adventure movie about the battle between the expedition team, which infiltrated the mysterious “Skull Island” with the intention of territory expansion, and “Kong”, the guardian of the island. GACKT will be providing the Japanese dubs for the protagonist, who is the leader of the expedition team Conrad, acted by Tom Hiddleston.

During the public dubbing, he entered the venue with Sasaki Nozomi, who, similarly, will be providing the Japanese dub for the movie’s heroine, Weaver, acted by Brie Larson. With regards to when he was told that he will be doing the dubs, GACKT said 「I am very much looking forward to being involved with the work through the voice of the protagonist.」, and now, after he has finished the actual recording in the morning, he once again shared his thoughts on the movie, saying 「I think that it’s a really good movie. Please do watch it」.

Then, immediately, public dubbing started, and GACKT was worried for Sasaki Nozomi who remained tense. GACKT showed off a “top-class” performance with a low voice suited for the composed retired veteran who doesn’t really show his emotions and did it in one take, but when Sasaki Nozomi made mistakes with her lines, he gently followed with 「It’s alright, shall we do it again」. And even when Sasaki Nozomi made mistakes, he smiled and said 「Cute」.

After completing dub recording for 2 scenes, GACKT was asked about the movie, to which he gave his seal of approval, saying 「It was so interesting that from the start of the movie, which opened with a completely different King Kong than what my generation was familiar with, to the very end, I was at the edge of my seat」. Also, he was surprised by what came after the ending credits. Sasaki Nozomi too, shared her impression of it excitedly, saying 「Its power and presence were so amazing that it felt as if I was in there too. I think it’s a movie that both men and women can enjoy」.

In addition, GACKT said that the way the movie’s time axis progresses in 2 parts and the use of creatures beyond one’s imagination were the highlights. He also pointed out that there were many scenes that paid tribute to special effects and Ghibli, and apparently, when GACKT was watching the movie as well, the manager who sat next to him would keep explaining and saying things like 「This is that scene」.

Then, when asked about future dubbing work, GACKT said 「I enjoy voice acting work. I would like to accept offers as much as possible」, and for Hollywood movies as well, GACKT showed an interest, saying 「Because I’m recently preparing for my tour, I’ve been rejecting offers but I would like to take up that challenge again」.

The movie 『Kong: Skull Island』 will be released on March 25 (Sat) in Marunouchi Picadilly, Shinjuku Picadilly, and more. Godzilla vs. King Kong” is expected to be released in 2020 following this movie. GACKT said 「It’s 20 or 30 times more interesting than Jurassic Park. I don’t really put it like this, and it seems like it’ll become part of a series so it’s definitely a good idea to catch this」, do come and enjoy this movie along with GACKT’s acting.
