Singer GACKT and Kyomoto Masaki attended the Japan premiere of Tonde Saitama the movie (nationwide release on 22 February) on the 28th in Tokyo, along with Nikaido Fumi, Iseya Yusuke, Brother Tom, Shimazaki Haruka, Kato Ryo, Masuwaka Tsubasa, Nakao Akira, and director Takeuchi Hideki.

With this work being the first time GACKT would be meeting Kyomoto face-to-face, GACKT sounded eager, saying with a wry smile, “I’ve been acquainted with Kyomoto-san’s makeup artist since a long time ago, and I kept hearing about him, so I was looking forward to meeting him”, but “When I visited his dressing room to greet him, he said to me ‘We finally get to meet～!’ and ‘But, you know, we’re the same type, aren’t we!’. At that point in time, what came out from me was ‘Are we!?’ ”. Not expecting such a reaction, Kyomoto spoke quickly, saying, “But, you see, no matter where I went, I’d keep getting compared to GACKT-san, you know? That’s what I meant!”, and hearing that, GACKT too was at a loss for words, saying, “Oh, I see…”.

In addition, GACKT looked back on filming and mentioned being startled by Kyomoto’s methods, saying, “Kyomoto’s world, amazing!” “When Kyomoto-san stops a long line of script, the AD guys will gesture. Then Kyomoto-san will say, ‘Ah～! That was a break!’. But upon hearing that, to both Fumi-chan and me, we’d think that definitely wasn’t a break”. On the other hand, Nikaido spoke of the quirky actors that were gathered, including Kyomoto, and she expressed their individuality with, “Everyone came from their respective planets and gathered here on earth, came together, then went home. That’s what it felt like on site”. Showing a sense of responsibility befitting of a chairman, she added,“That’s why, this time around, while on site, I properly did what I needed to while thinking that I was the most decent one around”.

From mangaka Maya Mineo comes the live adaptation of the Saitama citizens dissing-gag manga that stars Nikaido Fumi and GACKT. Asami Rei (GACKT), a transfer student returning from America who is a Tokyo high school student, fights for the freedom of Saitama citizens as a member of the Saitama Liberation Front while going up against a battle in the Kanto area.

The Japan premiere event for the live adaptation movie of Maya Mineo’s popular manga, Tonde Saitama, was held in Tokyo on 28 January. The two leading stars, Nikaido Fumi and GACKT, along with co-stars Iseya Yusuke, Brother Tom, Shimazaki Haruka, Kato Ryo, Masuwaka Tsubasa, Nakao Akira, Kyomoto Masaki, and director Takeuchi Hideki appeared for the stage greeting.

It is a live adaptation of a manga of the same name which attracted a lot of attention for lines like “Saitama citizens, eat the grass over there” and other such thorough dissing of Saitama prefecture. While GACKT described this movie as “the biggest farce of this century”, he recalled, “We were told to never act in a way that aims to create laughter. From start to end, I acted in a fever”. He then added, “There’s a scene where Iseya-kun was shoving peanuts into my nose. Iseya-kun was so serious that I got peanuts stuck in my nostrils a number of times during rehearsals. Do you understand how I feel?”, drawing laughter from the audience.

Of the filming that went on with quirky individuals gathered, Nikaido Fumi, who took on the challenge of a male role, said, “It was like each person represented their own ‘planets’ and gathered on earth, coming together to perform, then all splitting up to go home. I think I was the most decent person on site”. To that, GACKT countered with “I thought that I was the most decent one”, but when he heard that he was being asked to play a high school student, he confessed that “I received the offer to play a high school student and immediately declined”. With a wry smile, he continued, “I was told that『he’s a special high school student』and I wondered what kind of high school student is that. Furthermore, on the first day of filming, it started with a kiss scene with Nikaido-san, and I thought, ‘What a process’ ”.

In addition, with regards to Kyomoto, with whom he is acting with for the first time, GACKT said, “I’ve been acquainted with Kyomoto-san’s makeup artist since a long time ago, and I kept hearing about him, so I was looking forward to meeting him”. It appears that it took 15 years for them to finally come face-to-face and he was taken by a strong sense of familiarity. “When I went to the dressing room to greet him, he said, ‘We finally get to meet～. We’ve finally met’, and then ‘But, you know, we’re the same type, aren’t we!’ ”. “At that point, I spoke without thinking. Like, ‘Are we!?’ ”, he said and the audience burst out in laughter.

On the other hand, Shimazaki, Brother Tom, and Masuwaka, who were originally from Saitama, were elated, saying, “Finally, the day when we can proudly say ‘I come from Saitama’ has come”. Brother Tom was full of confidence, saying “This might be this year’s movie that beats Queen”, but director Takeuchi retorted, “No, it won’t”, and the emcee, announcer Sano Mizuki handled it by saying “You’re free to dream”.

Tonde Saitama will be released on 22 February.

Singer GACKT appeared for the Japan premiere of the movie Tonde Saitama (releasing 22 February), which was held in Tokyo on the 28th. Based on the “Saitama dissing” manga of the same name, GACKT plays the overly unconventional character of a “secret Saitama citizen” transfer high school student and he revealed the backstory of his casting with a smile, saying, ““When I first heard that the role was that of a high school student, my immediate answer was no”.

This movie is a live adaptation of Maya Mineo’s 1982 manga which drew attention for lines which criticise Saitama like “There’s a traffic bill to travel from Saitama to Tokyo!” “Saitama citizens, eat the grass over there!” “It’s Saitama huntingー!” and so on.

In a fictional Japan setting where Saitama citizens do not have free reign to travel in and out of Tokyo and are severely persecuted by Tokyo citizens, Dannoura Momomi (Nikaido Fumi), the student council president of Tokyo’s most prestigious school, meets Asami Rei (GACKT), the transfer student returning from America who is actually a Saitama citizen and gets thrust into a fight to liberate Saitama in this full-fledged “nonsensical” story.

GACKT declined the offer once but he was told about the content and eventually accepted the offer. Recalling the events, he said, “At that point, I was told that even if he’s a high schooler, “he’s a special high schooler”. Won’t you be curious about what a special high schooler is? And then I got to understand the project”. “When we started filming on the first day, it was already a kiss scene. I thought, what a process”, he said, but despite being flustered, he revealed that he was drawn into the worldview, adding, “On that day, the set was ornate and luxurious, so our appearances looked appropriate but the staff looked out of place. The makeup for my other co-stars was amazing too, and with such an entrypoint, it really was a great start.”

Aside from Nikaido and GACKT, Iseya Yusuke, Brother Tom, Shimazaki Haruka, Masuwaka Tsubasa, Nakao Akira, Kyomoto Masaki, and Director Takeuchi Hideki too made an appearance on this day. Making a point, Nikaido said, “This time it really was a large gathering of highly individualistic people, and it was as if each of them came down to earth to represent their own planets before going back home. I thought that I was the most decent person”, and GACKT opposed to it, saying, “I thought I myself was the most decent one” and then everyone else began raising their hands, saying “I’m the most decent one”…

Also, as it was GACKT’s first time working with Kyomoto, who acted as the “Legendary Saitama Citizen” Saitama Duke, he went to his dressing room to greet him, and GACKT looked a little uncomfortable as he recalled the incident, “He said to me, ‘We finally get to meet! But, you know～! We’re the same type, aren’t we!”. “It naturally came out, y’know, and I said ‘Are we～!?’ ”, said GACKT, voicing his disagreement. To that, Kyomoto explained falteringly, “We had the same makeup artist so about 15 years ago I heard about GACKT-san. But I’ve never met him throughout those 15 years, and during that time, no matter where I went, I’d keep getting compared to GACKT-san. I’d think, ‘I’m 60 though～’. That’s what I meant”.
