CINEMA.NE.JP: Cloudy skies turned sunny the moment GACKT appeared! Okinawa International Movie Festival digest

The 「Shima Zenbu de Ookina-sai　9th Okinawa International Movie Festival」 was held over a period of 4 days from April 20 (Thu) to 23 (Sun) 2017. On the final day, the annual red carpet was held at Naha’s Kokusaidori, and this year as well, many actors and related persons walked on it, charming the fans.
This time, we would like to put a spotlight on GACKT on this red carpet event.

The main event starts at 12 sharp but the weather was somewhat cloudy. It was lucky that it did not rain but, unexpectedly, the moment GACKT-san appeared, the weather turned sunny.
He has often been said to 「possess」 superstardom and we witnessed before our his his aura undoubtedly changing even the weather.

GACKT-san arrived together with the director of 「Karanukan」, Yasuhiro Hamano, co-star Kimura Suzuka-san and more.
Cheers from the fans grew at the sight of him with his hand on Kimura Suzuka-san’s waist, escorting her as he led and casually walked on.

The weather turned sunny, as if the cloudy sky from just moments ago were a lie, and the photographers took the opportunity to click away on their camera shutters. Of course, I was one of them too.
Synopsis of the movie 「Karanukan」, that GACKT is acting in

“The internationally acclaimed photographer Ooyama Hikaru (GACKT) meets a beautiful girl, Ishigaki Maumi (Kimura Suzuka) when visiting Okinawa.
During a photoshoot of Maumi at a waterfall in the Yaeyama islands, a strong beam of sunlight suddenly blinded Ooyama, turning everything before him to white.Before he knew it, Maumi had mysteriously disappeared… Ever since then, Ooyama started to search for Maumi without knowing why, and during this time, he collects photos of the beautiful scenery while touching Okinawa’s overwhelming nature, culture, and arts.
Why did the girl disappear. Was it a dream, or could it have been the river God 「Karanukan」...”
Director Yasuhiro said that the movie title 「Karanukan」 was formed by learning the language of Yaeyama. 「Kaara」 refers to river, 「nu」as “‘s”, and 「Kan」 refers to God, giving the title the meaning of 「river(’s) god」.

FILMAGA.FILMARKS.COM: GACKT, two great masters ・Hamano Yasuhiro & Kanoh Tenmei 「People with intense belief」

At the 「9th Okinawa International Movie Festival」, which was held until the 23rd, there was a special invitation screening for the movie 『Karanukan』. It is a love story that is told through Okinawa’s overwhelming nature and culture. During the special screening on the 23rd, lead actor GACKT-san, newcomer Kimura Suzuka-san who plays the heroine, Kimura Yuichi-san, a.k.a. Kimu-ni, and director Hamano Yasuhiro appeared.

Director Hamano is a lifestyle producer known for the overall production of Tokyu Hands, QFRONT, and more. Apparently, he had wanted to try filming a movie, and when it came to starring, he decided that 「There’s no one else besides GACKT」, and through a mutual acquaintance, he made a heartfelt appeal to him.

With regards to this, GACKT said 「I’ve always had the thought of wanting to repay Okinawa, and I thought that I might be able to do that if I acted in this movie」, and that he gave the answer that he would like some time to think about whether he will accept the offer or not.

However, 「The director decided on his own that that was me “readily agreeing” to it. His belief is intense, and he’s a very strange person」 he added, revealing the director’s pushiness.

GACKT also recalled what it was like during filming, that he was a strange person from start to end, with his state during filming being unusual too. Like occasions when, for example, without looking in at the camera’s viewfinder at all, he suddenly says 「Okayー!」 and cuts the shoot while the camera is still running.

Also, Kanoh Tenmei-san was also involved in this movie to give guidance on photography. Kanoh-san thought that GACKT-san’s role in this movie was like Kanoh-san himself when he was young, and 「This person too is someone with intense belief」 said GACKT-san. The audience laughed.

GACKT-san acts as the photographer Ooyama, who, when visiting Okinawa, meets a beautiful girl Maumi, who is acted by Kimura Suzuka-san. She was picked through an audition during last year’s Okinawa International Movie Festival, and won the role of a superb heroine. It is a decorated onscreen debut.

During this time’s stage greeting, she was unable to hide her nervousness but she kept her eyes on GACKT-san and looked at him, while GACKT-san casually followed up, appearing to trust him completely. GACKT-san, too, said 「I may appear like this but I’m a person who doesn’t have walls」 with a cool expression.

One can touch on Okinawa’s wonderful land and mythology through this movie 『Karanukan』, which will be released in September of 2017.

OIMF.JP: (Extract) Famous stars parade down the bright red carpet under sunny weather

On April 23 (Sun), the red carpet was held at Naha’s Kokusaidori. A total of 1,099 people, in around 214 groups, walked down the red carpet which stretched further than it did last year. It was raining the previous day which raised concerns about this day’s weather but it was wonderfully sunny, and the event was held in a comfortable climate.

Despite that it was around an hour before the event starts, Kokusaidori was filled with the enthusiastic audience who waited there eagerly. After the mayor of Naha, Shiroma Mikiko’s opening address, the first celebrities to appear were Slimclub from Okinawa, who gave their all to liven up the movie festival. After them, not only did popular celebrities from Yoshimoto make appearances, but even GACKT-san from the movie 『Karanukan』, and even Supernova’s Sungje, who acted in a Korean movie for the first time, among many other prominent faces, slowly walked down the gorgeous red carpet.

Last to appear were President Osaki Hiroshi from the executive committee, the promotional figure for the film festival Miyagawa Tamako, and mayor of Naha Shiroma Mikiko. President Osaki greeted 「Haisai (hello)」, using Okinawa’s dialect, and gave his thanks to the mayor who gave the suggestion, 「Please make it the world’s longest red carpet」, following which he spoke of his vision for the movie festival, saying 「I hope that this movie festival will continue to be organised for many more years in the future」. From the city’s mayor came words of gratitude,「Everyone’s smiles shone, making this a very happy event」 she said, and the grand red carpet came to an end.

On the 23rd, the final day of 「Shima Zenbu de Ookina-sai　9th Okinawa International Movie Festival」, which was held in Okinawa, the red carpet event was held at Naha’s Kokusaidori, where the directors and cast of the movies that were screened appeared together with comedians and more.

In a complete contrast from the rainy weather the previous day, the final day was blessed with fine weather. The 150-meter long red carpet laid out on Kokusaidori had 1,099 guests in 130 groups walking down it, with an audience of 91,000 people gathered.

The cast and directors of the screened movies appeared, including Fukuhara Haruka from the movie 『Jyojyo En』, Tamashiro Tina, GACKT from the movie 『Karanukan』, Mamiya Shotaro from 『Theatrical version Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai』, Baba Fumika, Natsuna from 『Ai・Kakumei』, and Inaba Yuu from 『N.Y. Maxman』. Ohno Takuro from 『Nekonin』 walked while carrying the cat Kintoki.

The movie festival first started in 2009, and is an all-round entertainment festival that holds a rich variety of events, from movie screenings and stage greetings, to comedy performance, music lives, and fashion shows as well. This year, it was held over 4 days between April 20～23, with events held at over 20 locations including the northern side and at local islands, and had around 330,000 visitors.
