ENCOUNT.PRESS: GACKT: "I didn't get it, I saw it twice." , Hats off to Nolan's 'Tenet', "The concept blows me away"
LiLiCo in crutches: “During my first watch, I too…”
On the 31st, a live-streaming event was held at Space FS Shiodome in Shinbashi, Tokyo to celebrate the release of the film "Tenet" with musician GACKT and film commentator LiLiCo.
This is the latest action film based on the idea of going backwards in time, comes from director Christopher Nolan, whose previous works like The Dark Knight series, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk have given audiences the opportunity to experience a new world with fresh ideas, stunning visuals, and overwhelming realism. It will be the first Hollywood blockbuster to be released in a long time as a top-batter while movie releases continue to be postponed around the world.
The event was an opportunity to talk about the appeal of director Nolan with 49 selected fans who took part online.
A big fan of director Nolan, GACKT said, “He is, first of all, a director of a world of madness and who pushes the envelope. I think he’s truly amazing to be able to settle it down enough to just barely scrape the edge of being entertainment. When I watched Tenet once, I didn’t understand it at all. I was so frustrated that I had to watch it again. I was desperate to keep up with it, but the concept blew me away. Thick-headed people won't be able to get it. I guess I'm also a thick-headed person. When I saw the film a second time\, there were a lot of things that I realised for the first time. The realisations during my second watch moved me.”
LiLiCo, who broke her left patella on the 13th and was released from the hospital on the 17th, was still in crutches that day. She said, “I didn't get it the first time and watched it again. I fell into director Nolan's trap. I decided that the second time, I wasn't going to try and understand it, I was going to try and feel it. The soundtrack was amazing too.” Hearing this, GACKT looked inspired as he remarked, “There's an infinite scale going on in the background the whole time and it's frustrating because it adds to the anxiety. I thought I could use it in my own songs.”
When the MC asked, “Would you like to go back in time?”, GACKT answered, “No way. I think it's a very unpleasant experience.” On the other hand, LiLiCo said, “I want to go back to when I was a kid and learn Japanese, not start at 18.”
Lastly, GACKT ended with, “I'm curious to see how much you can understand on the first watch. If you get it, please send me a direct message on Instagram. It’s a movie packed with mysteries. It would be nice to figure it out one by one.”
Tenet opens in theaters nationwide on September 18.

ORICON.CO.JP: GACKT watches Nolan's latest film twice, unable to understand the master's latest film: "The concept blows me away"
Singer and actor GACKT attended the opening live streaming event for the movie "Tenet" (releasing on September 18th) in Tokyo on August 31st. It was revealed that the film directed by Christopher Nolan was so "difficult" that he had to watch it twice.
This is the latest film from Nolan, the "world's most anticipated" director of the "Dark Knight" series, "Inception", "Interstellar" and "Dunkirk", which continues to give audiences a new experience of the world with its innovative ideas, stunning visuals and overwhelming realism.
GACKT, who is a big fan of Nolan's work, praised the director from the beginning, saying, "There are many directors who express a world of madness or a world that is so extreme, but I think he has a wonderful sense of balance that brings it down to the level of entertainment.”
Regarding the movie, he confessed, “I watched it once and had no idea what it was about. I was so frustrated that I had to watch it again. The concept is so new that there are many parts that are difficult for thick-headed people to accept. I think I’m very thick-headed too… There were a lot of things I didn't understand while watching the film.” However, of the film’s appeal, he said, “In the latter half of the film, things that I didn't understand start to connect. I experienced that once, and then went back on another day to watch it again. When I saw the film a second time on a different day, there were a lot of things that I realised for the first time. I was impressed by what I realised the second time around and I understood that this is how it’s meant to be enjoyed.”
When the MC said that it was surprising that he was thick-headed, GACKT laughed and said, “Well, you know… (this head) is thick.”
He added, “The concept was so absurd, that I kept wondering what it meant. I was trying my best to try and understand it, but in the middle of the film, one of the characters said, ‘You don’t have to think with your head.’ It felt as if that was being said to me (lol). If you can’t make sense of it, you wouldn’t be able to understand it in the middle too. I'm looking forward to seeing how many people can understand this movie from the first time.”
LiLiCo and MC Okuhama Reira were also in attendance at the event.
In this film, an unnamed man (John David Washington) is suddenly ordered to go on a mission. The mission is to break the rules of time and save humanity from World War III. The key word is "Tenet". Can the nameless man carry out his mission with his partner (Robert Pattinson) and solve the great mystery?

EDGELINE-TOKYO.COM: GACKT watched "TENET," directed by Christopher Nolan, once and didn't understand it, desperately wanted to "watch it again because it was too frustrating"! If he were to act, "I'll throw up."
Singer, actor GACKT and TV personality LiLiCo appeared at Space FS Shiodome in Tokyo on the 31st to celebrate the release of the film "Tenet" and discuss Nolan.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, whose previous works include the "Dark Knight" series, "Inception", "Interstellar" and "Dunkirk", this is a time suspense film about an escape from the rules of time in order to prevent World War III, and the key word in the story is "TENET".
Starting off, GACKT described director Nolan as, “He is, first of all, a director of a world of madness and who pushes the envelope. I think he’s truly amazing to be able to settle it down enough to just barely scrape the edge of being entertainment.”
Next, GACKT spoke about the movie itself, saying, “I didn’t understand it at all.”
“I was so frustrated that I had to watch it again, and I'm desperately following it. I'm desperately trying to keep up with it. The concept is so new that thick-headed people won't be able to accept it. I guess I'm also a thick-headed person... There are parts of the story that I didn’t understand in the middle. But the further into the latter half of the film we went, the more I began to understand it, and when I saw the film a second time on a different day, there were a lot of things that I realised for the first time. It made me realise that such a form of inspiration exists too.”
Continuing, he addressed future audiences of the film and shared what he felt about it. “I was trying my best to try and understand it, and various characters come up during the film, but in the middle, one said, ‘You don’t have to think with your head.’ and I thought that applies to me too. I do wonder how many people can follow the movie from the first time because it's calculated, but it's made in a sensible way.”
Speaking about the film's action scenes, GACKT combined the words retrograde and progressive, and said that it was a strange experience. He said, “When I watched it the first time, the action scenes made me feel nauseous. The second time I watched it, I realised that it was designed from the start to work from both sides.” When asked what if he was offered a part in the film, he said, “I’d throw up if I was ordered to do it. I think I’d hate it a lot.”
The event was attended by 49 online fans who asked a variety of questions. When GACKT was asked if there is anyone in his life who is like his partner to the protagonist in the film, he replied, "We are far apart in age, but I think our chairman is my partner now. We've gone through some tough times together so he is my partner. We can talk about everything from the trivial to the serious, and although we're far apart in age and have a relationship of senior and junior, we're like brothers.”
And finally, GACKT said, “I'm curious to see how much you can understand on the first watch and get the message in the film. If you have opinions on what is what, please send me a direct message on my Instagram and I think I’ll be able to understand it much better too. Please do message me on Instagram. There are a lot of mysteries, so I hope you'll be able to solve them for me one by one.”
Tenet is scheduled to screen nationwide on September 18!

MOVICHE.COM: GACKT: "It's frustrating," LiLiCo: "I've fallen into the Christopher Nolan trap."
Come September 18, TENET, a suspenseful action film starring John David Washington from Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight series, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, will be released in cinemas. A live event was held at Space FS Shiodome on August 31st to celebrate the release of the film, where GACKT, a big fan of director Nolan, and film commentator LiLiCo took the stage.
GACKT, who had already watched the film before, said, “I saw it once...but I didn't understand it at all. It was so frustrating that I had to watch it again”. Adding on, he said, “The concept is so new that there are many parts that obstinate people may not be able to accept. I'm also an obstinate person…” GACKT said that when he watched the movie for the second time, he was “moved by 'realization'”. He smiled and said, “I'm looking forward to seeing how many people will be able to follow this movie after one watch.”
About the music in this film, GACKT pointed out that, “There's an infinite scale going on in the background the whole time,” and he frankly said, “It's frustrating because it adds to the fear and anxiety.” But he appeared to realise that “the infinite scale can be used in this way”, and revealed that he planned to reflect it in his own music, saying, “[I was wondering] how I can use it in [my] next song.”
LiLiCo, who said she felt the same way as GACKT, said, “I went to see it again the day after I saw it. I suppose this is what it means to fall into Christopher Nolan's trap.” Considering its international success, she gave her prediction for the future of the film, saying, “I think it's going to be a hit in Japan too.”
In reference to the film’s protagonist experiencing a retrograde world, they were asked, “What would you want to do if you were to experience a similar world?” GACKT immediately replied, “I don’t want to go in reverse.”
“I think it’d be even more disturbing than you’d imagine. The protagonist's experience of the retrograde world is incredibly uncomfortable. I didn't understand it the first time, but after watching it twice, I know exactly how he feels," he said.
