MOVICHE.COM: GACKT: "It's frustrating," LiLiCo: "I've fallen into the Christopher Nolan trap."

Come September 18, TENET, a suspenseful action film starring John David Washington from Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight series, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, will be released in cinemas. A live event was held at Space FS Shiodome on August 31st to celebrate the release of the film, where GACKT, a big fan of director Nolan, and film commentator LiLiCo took the stage.

GACKT, who had already watched the film before, said, “I saw it once…but I didn’t understand it at all. It was so frustrating that I had to watch it again”. Adding on, he said, “The concept is so new that there are many parts that obstinate people may not be able to accept. I’m also an obstinate person…” GACKT said that when he watched the movie for the second time, he was “moved by ‘realization’”. He smiled and said, “I’m looking forward to seeing how many people will be able to follow this movie after one watch.”

About the music in this film, GACKT pointed out that, “There’s an infinite scale going on in the background the whole time,” and he frankly said, “It’s frustrating because it adds to the fear and anxiety.” But he appeared to realise that “the infinite scale can be used in this way”, and revealed that he planned to reflect it in his own music, saying, “[I was wondering] how I can use it in [my] next song.”

LiLiCo, who said she felt the same way as GACKT, said, “I went to see it again the day after I saw it. I suppose this is what it means to fall into Christopher Nolan’s trap.” Considering its international success, she gave her prediction for the future of the film, saying, “I think it’s going to be a hit in Japan too.”

In reference to the film’s protagonist experiencing a retrograde world, they were asked, “What would you want to do if you were to experience a similar world?” GACKT immediately replied, “I don’t want to go in reverse.”
“I think it’d be even more disturbing than you’d imagine.The protagonist’s experience of the retrograde world is incredibly uncomfortable. I didn’t understand it the first time, but after watching it twice, I know exactly how he feels,” he said.
