Flowers were laid at the cenotaph on Fukanuma Beach at Sendai City’s Arahama District.

There used to be many homes and sights of children running around but until now, rebuilding of the coastal area has hardly progressed.

It is said that the tsunami reached the height of this pine tree.

「So as to never forget this day…」

March 11, 2018, 10 a.m.
Visited Arahama Elementary School in Sendai City’s Arahama District.

Inside, the building remains the same as it was at the time of the disaster, with a model of the city and documentation from before the disaster, and documentation from after the disaster on display.

There was a loss for words when thinking about what the children must’ve felt as they stood on the roof of the school and watched their city get washed away.

The temperature today is 4 degrees Celsius. It’s particularly cold at this temperature as well, but its like a flicker compared to the snow 7 years ago.

320 people took refuge on the rooftop. Rescue efforts via helicopter continued until the next night as well.

Flowers were laid at a disaster prevention office building in Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture.

With the first tsunami reaching a height of 6m against the 12m tall building, 53 people managed to take refuge on the rooftop but 43 lives were then lost when the 15.5m high tsunami hit.

Ms. Endo Miki, a female official, risked her life to continue announcements even after all those around her have stopped, and eventually drowned from the tsunami.

The building’s skeletal remains still stands even now.

620 people from Minamisanriku Town lost their lives, and 211 are still missing to this day.

Damaged dwellings amounted to 3143 structures that were completely destroyed, 178 structures that were semi-destroyed, and 3321 structures that were partially destroyed.

Here’s a report from the secretary.

「So as to never forget this day…」

March 11, 2018 2:46 p.m.
Silent prayers and flowers were offered at the memorial service held at the Bayside Arena in Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture.

The Great East Japan Earthquake resulted in tremendous casualties, with 15,895 people dead, 2,539 people still missing, and 6,156 people wounded.

Even now, 7 years after the tragedy, there are still around 70,000 evacuees.

This time, when visiting the disaster sites, contrary to the harrowing sights from back then, there are now new townscapes, homes, and lots of smiling children.

Believe in rebirth without forgetting this day.
