ItalianoGACKT 「I’m a booby alien, If I act I’ll be King Kong, Most nerve-wracking episode in a bar in Hokkaido」
The first of it’s kind 「Roaring & Cheering Screening Event」 for the movie 『Kong: Skull Island』 was held on April 5 (Wed) at Tokyo’s Yurakucho, and GACKT, who is part of it’s Japanese dubbing cast, made an appearance. He answered MC Mafia Kajita’s questions. This time, we’re publishing the full text of what happened at the event. No spoilers are included.
Kajita: Thank you for waiting. I would like to call on this person as soon as possible. He voices Tom Hiddleston’s main protagonist Conrad in the Japanese dub version of action-adventure epic 『Kong: Skull Island』, it’s GACKT-san!
(GACKT appears from the back of the hall to loud cheers)
Kajita: Firstly, please say a greeting to our audience here.
GACKT: How are you doing?
Audience: Gooーーーd!!!!! (laughs)
GACKT: I hear a rather strange laughter though (laughs). I’m surprised by how high everyone’s tension is. What surprised me the most was the fact that MC Mafia K-kun is more than 10 years younger than me (laughs).
Audience: Ehーーーーー!?
Kajita: I see you took the trouble to look into my age. Thank you (laughs).
GACKT: That surprised me the most (laughs). I was wondering why there’s be someone who does combat sports but got surprised anyway.
Kajita: But I think GACKT has bigger chest muscles than I do (laughs).
GACKT: That’s because I’m a booby alien (laughs).
Kajita: Thank you (laughs). Firstly, let’s talk about the Japan premiere that was attended by the movie’s cast at Kabukicho Godzilla Road ahead of the March 12 release of the movie. This was a masterpiece but what did you talk to Tom Hiddleston about?
GACKT: We spoke about something along the lines of 「Was the movie difficult?」 at the hotel’s top floor, and he said something like 「The on-site location was tough, the heat and the humidity makes you feel dispirited」. Later on, after we actually walked on the carpet, he said it was too cold (laughs).
Kajita: Since it was at Kabukicho, were you all able to go to Golden Gai or some other area?
GACKT: Everyone was already saying 「It’s cold, it’s cold」, and hurried headed back into the cars. At the final stage, the actress (Brie Larson) was unable to withstand the cold and left the stage halfway (laughs). Like is that really okay. I’ve come to see these people as the type to do as they like.
Kajita: It’s the Hollywood style of things isn’t it? Speaking of Hollywood, there’s a scene at the start where MIYAVI-san acts in but, if GACKT-san were to get an offer to act in Hollywood, what do you think of it?
GACKT: That role?
Kajita: Well… Not limited to this time’s Kong Kong (laughs). In the sense of, if there’s a chance to act in a movie.
GACKT: Well, if the time’s right. When I saw MIYAVI appear right at the start of the movie, I thought 「Whoa, there’s an actor who looks exactly like MIYAVI」 (laughs). And I thought that there indeed were other people in the world who look exactly like yourself. Because even the expressions were amazingly alike, I thought 「That reeeeaally looks like MIYAVI」 (laughs). Later on, when I saw 「MIYAVI」 appear under the list of actors’ names, I thought 「What the hell, it’s MIYAVI」 (laughs).
Kajita: Does MIYAVI-san usually have a face that looks like it belongs to a Japanese soldier?
GACKT: Yeah… (laughs) Japanese soldier(laughs)? Well that’s his usual expression.
Kajita: If it was up to GACKT-san to act, what role would be good, or which would you like?
GACKT: If it’s me I’ll act as King Kong.
Kajita: Eh~ (laughs), at present I believe they no longer use suit actors but use motion capture instead though (laughs). Also, when GACKT watched the movie again, was there a scene that you wanted to focus on watching?
GACKT: There’s a scene of Vietnam. With lots of warehouses and boats lined up, it really had the atmosphere of Vietnam then. When it was confirmed that I’ll be dubbing for this movie, friends of mine who were American actors contacted me, and said 「I appeared in that Vietnam scene too」. I said, 「Eh? You went all the way to Vietnam?」, and he said actually, that was filmed in a studio. I thought that was amazing. Like, 「This is a studio!?」. Actually Hollywood does do everything in their studios but when I watched the scene that I didn’t expect to have been filmed in a studio, I wanted to look from the number of friends of mine who appeared in there.
Kajita: I don’t think everyone knows though (laughs).
GACKT: I suppose that’s so (laughs).
Kajita: I see, yes (laughs). Well… so, today’s Roaring and Cheering Screening Event is the first of it’s kind so, let’s talk about GACKT-san’s “firsts”. Please tell us about the most nerve-wracking episode in your life thus far.
GACKT: In the past, I went to Hokkaido for a calendar shoot without my bodyguards though. In a city called Shizunai, it doesn’t sound very nice of me to say this but, if you go there at night, it’s like a ghost town. I even wondered 「Is there anyone around?」. There, I found a bar so I went in for a drink. Around 1 a.m. at night, I started hearing a lot of human voices outside the bar. I wondered 「Do people start to gather at 1 a.m. in the middle of the night in Shizunai?」. Then, when I decided it was about time for me to leave the place, it was around 2 when I wanted to step out, when the staff said to me 「Will you wait awhile before going outside?」. I asked 「Why?」, and he said 「Because there are too many people outside and you won’t be able to leave」. When I asked for the reason for that, he said 「Everyone from the village came and gathered here to see GACKT-san」 (laughs). 「No way (laughs)」 I thought, and when opened the doors of the shop, even the police were there. There were only around 6 of them though. Compared to those 6 police officers, there were around 500 villagers. I thought 「This is definitely impossible」 (laughs). There’s only around 6 meters between the shop and the car but while I walked, I think I was right in the middle. The moment someone hit my shoulder, a wave of 500 people suddenly came at me all at once, I was mobbed (laughs).
Kajita: It sounds like a zombie movie (laughs).
GACKT: It was like a real life Walking Dead.
Kajita: (Laughs), thank you (laughs). With that wonderful punchline, we’re almost out of time.
Audience: Ehーーーーー.
Kajita: I’m really sorry.
GACKT: You guys came here to watch the movie didn’t you. It’s not for me anyway (laughs).
Kajita: Lastly, please end off with a final message for everyone who came today.
GACKT: Recently I believe everyone watches movies on their iPads or on their TVs but I’ve recently been thinking that they’re still best watched in cinemas with good sound systems and powerful visuals after all. I think that it’s lucky that everyone gets to watch the Roaring and Cheering Screening so, please do enjoy it. It’s the dubbed version today right?
Kajita: I’m afraid it might not…… (laughs)
GACKT: Right (laughs). Because it’ll look like I’m just here for fun (laughs).

GACKT: You’re laughing too much (laughs).
Kajita: (Talking to staff) Eh? Eh? It’s the subtitled version!? Today? Wait, wait a minute, why did you ask GACKT-san to come (laughs)!?
GACKT: Subtitled version??
Audience: Ehーーーーーーー!
Kajita: Eh, really?
GACKT: Well, then after watching this, go watch the dubbed version too.
Kajita: Y-yes (laughs).
GACKT: My voice in the dubbed version, I think it’s a really good voice. I don’t mean to brag though (laughs). Because Tom’s face will be speaking with my voice, I think it’ll feel weird but after the first 40 minutes, that feeling will disappear, but that’s already the middle part of the movie though (laughs). Before you reach the ending, it’ll sound like it’s Tom’s voice anyway (laughs). If you watch it 3 or 4 times, I think you’ll recognise it as Tom’s voice. When you can recognise that, everyone will be happy, the cinema company will be happy too since you’ve watched it 4 times (laughs). In that sense, please do watch it.
